Futures and currency trader Bacon, who is his bachelor days often went club-hopping in Manhattan with Paul Tudor Jones and who remains a close pal of the famed trader, delivered a respectable 25% net return to his clients last year. He traffics in "anything that trades" on the London International Financial Futures Exchange, the Marche a Terme International de France and the Singapore International Monetary Exchange. In his late 30s, Bacon is also active in the Japanese bond market, preferring the anonymity of Japan's so-called screen trading, where the broker's identity is kept secret. His Greenwich, Conn., firm handles more than $340 million in client's funds.

Years ago, before his own fortunes soared, Louis Bacon compared the famed and reclusive trader Bruce Kovner to the biggest elephant in the jungle. Explained he: "Everyone knows Kovner's there, and even though he tries hard to hide, he can't." Today, as his own renown as a futures and currencies trader is starting to reach pachydermous proportions, Bacon's secretiveness has come to match Kovner's.

In the wake of last year's 39.7% net return to investors in Remington Trading Partners [his flagship domestic fund] and a somewhat loftier gain in his offshore assets, Bacon has just raised another $500 million in funds - elevating the total pile he manages to $1.2 billion. Three years ago Bacon operated in obscurity, with less than $200 million. A North Carolina native in his mid-30s, Bacon remains close to Paul Tudor Jones - a friend since they used to take in Manhattan nightlife together in their bachelor days. His stepmother is Julian Robertson's sister. From his New York City offices, he swaps "anything that trades" - whether it be on the London Financial Futures Exchange, the Marche a Terme International de Franc or the Singapore International Monetary Exchange. Bacon, who has a master's degree in finance from Columbia University, worked for Shearson Lehman Brothers before he founded Moore in the mid-Eighties. An outdoorsman, he enjoys boating and fishing vacations on North Carolina's Figure Eight Island.

Time was when Louis Bacon toiled as a broker for superstar trader Paul Tudor Jones II, a friend and fellow southerner. By 1993, however, Bacons was beating the pants off his pal. Last year his 39% return, after fees, completely outclassed Joness paltry 1.5%. A North Carolina native, Bacon manages more than $1 billion for a group of European investors that includes Credit Agricole and Lombard Odier. The 38-year-old speculator in currencies and bonds, who works near New York Citys Rockefeller Center, commutes from southern Connecticut, where he lives in a $2.8 million Tudor-style house. An outdoorsman, Bacon has hunted game with a compound bow in Zimbabwe and likes to fish. He plunked down $11 million last December for an entire 445-acre island in Great Peconic Bay, 80 miles east of Manhattan. He is said to plan to build a vacation house on the undeveloped island, which is graced with pristine forest and wildlife, but will otherwise not alter its natural beauty.
